یانی کریسومالیس (به یونانی: Γιάννης Χρυσομάλλης) (زاده ۱۴ نوامبر ۱۹۵۴ - کالاماتا) معروف به یانی، موسیقیدان بزرگ، پیانیست، نوازندهٔ کیبورد و آهنگساز اهل یونان با شهرتی جهانی است.
عمدهٔ موفقیت وی با اجرا کنسرت در آکروپولیس یونان به دست آمده‌است که به عنوان پربیننده ترین و زیباترین کنسرت موسیقی از آن یاد مشود و با فروش ۷ میلیون نسخه، پرفروش‌ترین ویدئوی موسیقی تاریخ بعد از «تریلر مایکل جکسون» است. این کنسرت در ۶۵ کشور جهان پخش شد و نزدیک به یک میلیارد نفر نفر آن را تماشا کردند.
همچنین آلبوم‌های وی با تعداد بیش از 70 میلیون نسخه در سراسر جهان به فروش رفته‌است. موسیقی‌های یانی در مسابقات المپیک، برنامه‌ها و مسابقات ورزشی در تلویزیون به صورت گسترده پخش شده‌است. آثار او را نوعی موسیقی عصر نو می‌نامند.
یانی یک پیانیست و آهنگساز خودآموخته‌است که نواختن آهنگ را برای خانواده خود شروع کرده‌است، وی هیچ آموزش رسمی و غیررسمی برای یادگری نت نداشته. وی رکورددار شنا ۵۰ متر آزاد مردان در سال ۱۹۶۹ در ۱۴ سالگی برای کشور یونان است. یانی در ۱۸ سالگی برای تحصیل به دانشگاه مینسوتا رفت. وی در حالی که دانشجو بود به عضویت گروه افتاب‌پرست درآمد و با چارلی آدامز آشنا شد و توانست موفقیت‌های زیادی با این گروه در ایالت‌های مینه‌سوتا، آیووا، ویسکانسین، ایلی‌نوی و داکوتای جنوبی به‌دست آورد. یانی در سال ۱۹۷۶ در رشته روان‌شناسی فارغ‌التحصیل شد. وی به شهر لس‌آنجلس نقل مکان کرد و با همکاری جان تش و چارلی آدامز در سال ۱۹۸۷ یک گروه موسیقی کوچک تشکیل داد که حاصل ساخت آلبوم‌های کلید تخیل، خارج از سکوت و روزهای آفتاب‌پرست بود.

زندگی
یانی کریسومالیس در ۱۴ نوامبر ۱۹۵۴ در شهر کالاماتا یونان به دنیا آمد و دوران کودکی و نوجوانی اش را در شهر زیبا و کوهستانی کالاماتا گذراند. مادر و پدر یانی هر دو اهل یونان هستند. مادر وی فلیتسا (Felitsa) و پدرش سوتیری (Sotiri) نام دارد. یانی قطعه‌هایی را به نام مادرش ساخته‌است و علاقه خاصی به کشور خود و اماکن قدیمی دارد. در سن چهارده سالگی به رشته شنا علاقه مند شد و توانست در آن رکوردی ملّی برای کشورش، یونان، به جا گذارد و تلاش زیادی برای رسیدن به رقابت‌های المپیک نمود.
در سال ۱۹۷۲ میلادی به آمریکا برای تحصیل در رشته مورد علاقه اش، روان شناسی در مشهورترین دانشگاه روان شناسی دنیا یعنی مینسوتا رفت. پس از فارغ التحصیل شدن از دانشگاه در یک گروه محلی راک در مینسوتا بنام کاملئون (Chameleon) به عنوان نوازنده کیبورد آغاز به کار کرد. پس از آن کسی نمی‌داند چه اتـفاقی برای یانی افتاد اما او اکنون صاحب استودیوی شخصی است و بیش از 75 میلیون نسخه از آلبوم‌های وی در دنیا به فروش رفته‌است.
او به موسیقیدانی مستقل با عقاید و تفکری منحصر به فرد تبدیل شد و به شهرت و محبوبیتی جهانی دست یافت و این در حالی بود که یانی حتی قادر به خواندن و نوشتن ساده‌ترین نت‌های موسیقی نیز نبود. ولی با تبحری خاص ساخته‌های خود را با روش مخصوص خود و رسم الخط ابداعی خود می‌نگارد. یانی قطعاتی کامل و زیبا دارد که کاملا ساخته خود اوست و در سبکی انحصاری اجرا شده‌است. همچنین از او به عنوان یک افسانه زنده و بزرگترین موسیقیدان حال حاضر جهان نام برده می‌شود به طوری که نام او جزو ۱۰ موسیقیدان برتر تاریخ از دید انجمن موسیقی و هنر ثبت شده‌است.منبع
اکثر آلبوم‌های یانی توسط شرکتهای virgin records و یا EMI تولید، تهیه و توزیع می‌شوند. یانی موسیقی‌های زیادی برای برنامه‌های تلویزیونی و سینمایی ساخته و همچنین قطعات تبلیغاتی متعددی برای شرکتهای تجارتی و بازرگانی خلق نموده‌است.
او اوقاتش را بیشتر در لوس آنجلس و سیاتل آمریکا می‌گذراند و اکنون شهروند آمریکا به شمار می‌رود. او مدت‌ها با خانم هنرمندی بنام لیندا ایوانز همکاری صمیمی داشت و در اوایل سال ۱۹۹۸ این ارتباط را پایان یافته اعلام کرد.
یانی از اوایل سال ۱۹۹۸ تا ماه آوریل ۱۹۹۹ هیچ گونه فعالیت تولیدی کنسرت و توری را برگزار نکرد و به استراحت پرداخت. اما در سال ۲۰۰۰ یکی از بی نظیرترین آلبوم‌های خودش را ارائه داد. جالب این است که تمام تنظیمات و تبدیلات موسیقی این آلبوم شخصاً و فقط توسط خود یانی در استودیوی شخصی خودش انجام شد.ساخت این آلبوم بیانگر تغییرات در زندگی شخصی یانی بود.اثری متفاوت که تاثیر عمیق فرهنگ های مختلف جهان به خصوص شرق در یانی محسوس بود.
یانی تا به حال موسیقی به سبک مذهبی ارائه نکرده‌است چرا که همواره اعتقاد به خلق کارهایی جدید با تکیه به اندیشه‌های نو و جدید خود دارد. در قطعات Niki Nana و Aria موسیقی بر مبنای یک اپرای فرانسوی قدیمی متعلق به قرن نوزدهم میلادی بنام Lakme ساخته Leo Delibes می‌باشد و اشعاری که در این قطعات خوانده می‌شود اکثراً اصوات آهنگین بوده و فاقد معنای خاص می‌باشند و بر خلاف تصور، به زبان فرانسوی نمی‌باشند. به جز قسمت‌هایی محدود که به زبان انگلیسی هستند و در اشعار آلبوم ستایش ذکر شده‌اند.

یانی آهنگی تبلیغاتی را با همکاری مالکوم مکلارن ساخته‌است که سابقاً با گروه Pistols همکاری می‌کرده‌است. این آهنگ تغییر یافته یک اپرا است که با افزودن یک ترانه تکمیل شده‌است. این آهنگ که «جرات آرزو» یا Dare to Dream نام دارد برای شرکت هواپیمایی British Airways ساخته شده‌است.
خواننده مورد علاقه او پیتر گابریل است و اعتقاد دارد که در سال‌های اخیر به جز موسیقی محمد رسول‌الله، عیسی مسیح، دکتر ژیواگو، ایندرا گاندی و چند قطعه محدود دیگر، قطعه جالب توجهی نشنیده‌است.
سال‌ها پیش یانی با درامر خود چارلی آدامز Charlie Adams آشنا شد و اولین کار خود را بنام «بیرون از سکوت» یا Out Of Silence در سال ۱۹۸۷ (۱۳۶۶ شمسی) به بازار عرضه کرد.
یانی سال‌ها پیش با شهرداد روحانی نیز همکاری داشت و از تجربیات او استفاده فراوان برد و با همکاری و با استفاده از دانش و تجربه او، یکی از زیباترین کنسرت‌هایش را در شهر آکروپولیس یونان و با رهبری شهرداد روحانی اجرا نمود.
یانی در سال ۲۰۰۳ آلبومی متفاوت و پر تنوع به نام Ethnicity روانه بازار کرد و احاطه و قدرت خودش را در انواع مختلف موسیقی به دنیا ثابت کرد. این آلبوم یکی دیگر از خلاقیت های یانی را به نمایش گذاشت و ثابت کرد که یانی هنوز هم پیشرو در خلق آثار ماندگار و جدید است.یانی به یکباره نواهایی را کشف کرد که دارای ملودی های زیبا و هم آهنگ بود که در آثار جدیدش هم به چشم میخورد ولی اینبار یانی به اصل رسید او اینبار ملودی هایی را که دارای نظمی خاص بودند کنار هم چید تا دوباره اثری ماندگار خلق کند. در این آلبوم یانی با استفاده از خواننده‌های جدید و البته زیاد نسبت به کارهای قبلی اش نوعی تفاوت آشکار از لحاظ موسیقی با شعر در آهنگ‌هایش ایجاد کرده و به سبک جدید و منحصر به فرد Talk Show روی آورده‌است. به عقیده کارشناسان موسیقی و طرفداران موسیقی، یانی در سال‌های اخیر نسبت به دهه نود افت داشته هر چند این افت نامحسوس است ولی تاثیر زیادی بر روی یکه تازی یانی در عرصه موسیقی New Age داشته‌است.
البته خود یانی نام‌گذاری سبک عصر جدید (به انگلیسی: New Age) را بر روی آثار خود از بد شانسی‌اش می‌داند و خودش نام موسیقیٍ سازی معاصر (به انگلیسی: Contemporary Instrumental Music) را بیشتر می‌پسندد.
از جمله اجراهای وی می‌توان به کنسرت بزرگ آکروپولیس در ۱۹۹۴ چین و تاج محل در ۱۹۹۷ و لاس‌وگاس در ۲۰۰۶ اشاره کرد. آخرین اجرای یانی به سال ۲۰۰۸ در مکزیک بر می‌گردد، که در آن یانی همراه با چهار خوانندهٔ جوان برخی ار آثار مشهور و قدیمی‌اش از جمله در آیینه و ستایش را اجرا کرد. Nathan Pacheco، خواننده اپرا به ایتالیایی، Ender Thomas با ترانه‌هایی به زبان اسپانیایی و Chloe که در این اجرا به سه زبان انگلیسی و ایتالیایی و اسپانیایی یانی را همراهی کردند. در این برنامه خوانندهٔ دیگری با نام Leslie Mills هم حضور داشت.
آخرین آلبوم یانی Truth Of Touch نام دارد که در فوریه ۲۰۱۱ منتشر شد. طبق گفتهٔ یانی این نت‌های این آلبوم بیشتر الکترونیک است نه آکوستیک.
در آلبوم ۲۰۱۱ یانی از ۱۵ ترانه سه ترانه، آهنگ با خواننده و بقیهٔ آنها بی کلام است. خواننده‌های این آلبوم عبارت اند از لزلی میلز، نیتان پاشکو و کلوی لاوری که هرسه این افراد قبلا در آلبوم Voices هم با یانی همکاری داشته‌اند.

ولد یانی فی مدینة کالاماتا فی الیونان على سواحل البحر المتوسط بتاریخ 14 نوفمبر 1954 وهو الولد الأوسط لوالدیه.
بدأ بالعزف على آلة البیانو وهو فی الثامنة من العمر رافضا أخذ أی دروس فی العزف. لم تکن الموسیقى موهبته فقط، ففی عام 1969 وهو فی الرابعة عشر من العمر حطم یانی الرقم القیاسی الیونانی لسباق 50 متر فی السباحة الحرة للرجال.
فی العام 1972، وبتشجیع من والدیه ترک موطنه لیلتحق بجامعة مینوسوتا فی الولایات المتحدة الأمریکیة لیدرس علم النفس، وخلال فترة الدراسة قام بمشارکة فرقة روک بالعزف تدعى کامیلون وبدأ بتطویر أسلوبه الموسیقی الخاص مستخدما البیانو والأورغ لیبتکر أصوات جدیدة.
تخرج یانی من الجامعة عام 1979، وبعد التخرج قرر أن یمنح الموسیقى کل وقته وجهده لعام کامل. أراد أن یقصد الحیاة فی الموسیقى، وعلى الرغم من أنه لا یقرأ النوتة الموسیقیة فقد ألف أعمالا کاملة متحدیا التصنیف الموسیقی.
فی عام 1980 أصدر ألبومه المنفرد الأول بعنوان «متفائل» (Optimystique). ثم عمل یانی مع هولیوود وأنجز عدة أعمال موسیقیة لبعض الأفلام. وفی عام 1990 رافقت فرقة دالاس السیمفونیة یانی بحفلة موسیقیة أعطت بعدا آخر إلى أسلوبه الفرید وکانت مقدمة لأشیاء جدیدة. فی عام 1994 أحرز یانی انتصارا ذاتیا عندما عاد إلى موطنه الیونان وسجل عمل موسیقی فی مسرح هیرود أتیکوس فی أثینا الذی یعود إلى الألف الثانیة قبل المیلاد والنتیجة کانت ألبومه «فی الاکروبولیس» (at the Acropolis) لذی بیع منه أکثر من 7,000,000 نسخة حول العالم وحصد أکثر من 35 جائزة وارتفع لیصبح واحد من أکثر المبیعات للأعمال الموسیقیة المصورة.
وأصبح یانی الفنان الغربی الأول الذی یعزف ویسجل موسیقاه فی تاج محل فی الهند والمدینة المحرمة فی الصین حاصدا عدة جوائز بلاتینیوم لألبومه «إجلال» (Tribute). وقد عزف یانی بین الهند والصین لجمهور وصل إلى 250 ملیون شخص فی جولة طویلة شملت أکثر من 160 مدینة حول العالم فی رحلة أطلق علیها نفس اسم الألبوم.
فی عام 2000 أصدر یانی أول ألبوم له مسجل فی أستودیو بعد 7 سنوات وکان بعنوان «لو استطعت إخبارک» (If I Could Tell You)، بعد عامین من الانقطاع، یتکلم عن التغیرات فی حیاة ذلک الفنان، ومنها الانتقال إلى الساحل الشرقی لأمریکا وتغیرات أخرى رکزت على حیاته الشخصیة والمهنیة. وفی العام 2003 أصدر ألبومه «العرقیة» (Ethnicity) وهو الألبوم الثانی عشر له، وهو توسیع لمعنى «عالم واحد، شعب واحد» التی کانت دائما السمة الممیزة لمهنته. قدم فی هذا الألبوم مجموعة من المقطوعات الموسیقیة التی تنبض بالنغمات والأصوات لثقافات شعوب الأرض، مستخدما آلالات مختلفة على حد سواء کآلة الدیدجاریدو الأسترالیة وآلة دودوک الأرمینیة والکمان والطبل الهندی. ویقول یانی: «العدید من ثقافات شعوب العالم والأنماط الموسیقیة ممثلة فی هذا الألبوم. إن فیه الکثیر من اللون العرقی بمعنى آخر، أنه یمتلک العرقیة...حیث أن العرقیة یجب أن تعمل بالعرق والثقافة واللون وجمال المجتمع المتعدد الثقافات بالطریقة التی استخدمها لهذا الألبوم.»
إن واحدا من العناصر التی تمیز ألبوم "العرقیة" عن سابقیه هو الاستخدام الکبیر لصوت الإنسان، لیس فقط الأنغام المنفردة والتراتیل الجماعیة، بل بالکلمات أیضا، وهذا شیء نادر بالنسبة لهذا الفنان. فأغنیة «الوعد» (The Promise) على سبیل المثال، هی تعدیل لمقطوعة قدیمة تدعى «سیکرت فوس» رزت بکلمات کتبت من قبل صدیقة قدیمة له تدعى بامیلا مکنیل وأدیت بشکل عاطفی من قبل ألفریدا جیرالد التی رافقت رحلة یانی إجلال فی عام 1998. کما أن المقطوعة الأخیرة من الألبوم تعکس ثقافة هذا الفنان وتاریخه بأغنیة یونانیة شعبیة تدعى «جیفاری».

أصدر یانى آخر ألبوم له و هو یحمل اسم یانى میکسکانیام و هو یدمج بین الموسیقی الأمریکیة و المکسیکیة بعد ترقب طویل, وفی 24 مارس من عام 2009 قام یانی بإصدار ألبومین حملا اسمی Yanni Voices و Yanni Voces (أصوات یانی) وکان الألبوم الأخیر باللغة اللاتینیة بأکمله حیث قام یانی بالتعاون مع المنتج المعروف ریک ویک بصیاغة جدیدة لألحانه وتحویل بعض من مقطوعاته الشهیرة إلى أغان جدیدة یؤدیها أربعة من الشباب الموهوبین والمتمیزین هم نیثان باتشیکو ولیسلی مایلز وإندر توماس وکلوی، إضافة إلى مجموعة من الضیوف المکسیکیین والإسبان الذین شارکوا الغناء فی ألبوم YANNI VOCES منهم القدیر خوسیه خوسیه والنجمة أولغا تانون، وقد قام بجولة جدیدة فی المکسیک وأمیرکا خلال عامی 2008 و 2009 حملت اسم "Yanni Voices Live In Concert"، یذکر أن یانی قد صرح بأنه لن یتخلى عن موسیقا الانسترومینتال وسیستمر بتألیف هذا النوع من الموسیقى فی المستقبل.

Ο Yanni είναι συνθέτης και αυτοδίδακτος πιανίστας και γεννήθηκε στις 14 Νοεμβρίου 1954 στη Καλαμάτα. Ήταν μέλος της ελληνικής εθνικής ομάδας κολύμβησης εφήβων και σε ηλικία μόλις 14 ετών, κατέρριψε το πανελλήνιο ρεκόρ κολύμβησης, στα 50 μέτρα ελεύθερο. Όταν ενηλικιώθηκε (1972) πήγε στην Νέα Υόρκη για να φοιτήσει στο τμήμα Ψυχολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Μινεσότα ενώ παράλληλα έπαιζε πιάνο για τους Chameleon, γνωστή μπάντα Rock & Roll.
Το πρώτο του άλμπουμ έρχεται στα 1984 με τίτλο “Optimystique”, τα άλμπουμ "Dare To Dream" και το "My Time" προτάθηκαν για Bραβείο Grammy ενώ το άλπουμ Το "Reflections Of Passion" έγινε πολλές φορές πλατινένιος. Επίσης το 1989 η βρετανική αεροπορική εταιρεία British Airways χρησιμοποίησε την σύνθεση "Aria" του Yanni για τη διαφημιστική της καμπάνια.
Παρά το γεγονός ότι από τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 80 πούλησε πάνω από 6 εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα, η καριέρα του εκτινάχθηκε ακόμα περισσότερο τον Μάρτιο του 1994 όταν και κυκλοφόρησε σε δίσκο αλλά και βίντεο η συναυλία - σταθμός που έδωσε για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα στο Ωδείο Ηρώδου του Αττικού στις 25 Σεπτεμβρίου του 1993 με τον τίτλο «Yanni in Concert: Live Acropolis» παρουσία 2.000 χιλιάδων θεατών.

Yanni ( /ˈjɑːni/ yah-nee) is a Greek self-taught pianist, keyboardist, and composer (born Yiannis Hryssomallis; Greek: Γιάννης Χρυσομάλλης, Giannis Chrysomallis; November 14, 1954) who has spent his adult life in the United States.
A self-taught musician who continues to use the musical shorthand that he developed as a child, Yanni has blended jazz, classical, soft rock, and world music to create predominantly instrumental works. As this genre of music was not well suited for commercial pop radio and music television, Yanni achieved international recognition by producing concerts at historic monuments and by producing videos that were broadcast on public television. His breakthrough concert, Yanni Live at the Acropolis, yielded the second best-selling music video of all time. Additional historic sites for Yannis concerts have included Indias Taj Mahal, Chinas Forbidden City, the United Arab Emirates Burj Khalifa, Russias Kremlin, and Puerto Ricos El Morro castle.
At least fourteen of Yannis albums have peaked at #1 in Billboards "Top New Age Album" category, and two albums (Dare to Dream and In My Time) received Grammy nominations. Through late 2011, Yanni had performed live in concert before more than two million people in more than 20 countries around the world, and has accumulated more than 35 platinum and gold albums globally, with sales totaling over 20 million copies. A longtime fundraiser for public television, Yannis compositions have been used on commercial television programs, especially for sporting events such as the Tour de France, World Figure Skating Championships, U. S. Open Tennis Championships and Olympic Games. He has written film scores and the music for an award-winning British Airways television commercial.
Yanni has employed musicians of various nationalities, and has incorporated a variety of instruments from around the world, to create music that has been called an eclectic fusion of ethnic sounds. Influenced by his encounters with cultures around the world, his music is said to reflect his “one world, one people” philosophy.

Early life
Yanni displayed musical talent at a young age, playing piano at the age of 6. His parents encouraged him to learn at his own pace and in his own way, without formal music training. The self-taught musician continues to use the "musical shorthand" that he developed as a child, rather than employing traditional musical notation.
Yanni set a Greek national record in the 50-meter freestyle swimming competition at age 14.
In 1972, Yanni moved from Greece to the United States to attend the University of Minnesota, receiving a B.A. degree in psychology in 1976. During his time as a student, Yanni played in a local rock band and continued to study piano and other keyboard instruments.
Music career
Yanni joined the Minneapolis-based rock group Chameleon, working with its founder, drummer Charlie Adams. After leaving the band, Yanni moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of movie soundtrack work.
1980s

In 1980 Yanni recorded his first album Optimystique, which Atlantic Records re-released in 1984 and Private Music re-released in 1989.
Yanni formed a band in 1987 and began to tour in 1988, when he went on the road with an ensemble including pianist/singer John Tesh and drummer Charlie Adams, touring to promote his early albums, Keys to Imagination, Out of Silence, and Chameleon Days. A highlight of the tour was a performance with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra that elicited a positive review, considered seminal to Yannis public recognition, from a Dallas Times Herald critic. Yannis emergence was said to be "timed perfectly" with the growing popularity of contemporary instrumental music.
1990s
Yanni gained visibility as the result of his November 1990 appearances in People and on The Oprah Winfrey Show with actress Linda Evans, with whom he had been in a relationship since 1989. However, high visibility appearances on public television, best-selling records and videos, and overflow concerts earned him recognition beyond his relationship with Evans.
Dare to Dream, released in 1992, was Yanni’s first Grammy-nominated album. It included "Aria," a song based on Léo Delibes The Flower Duet (Lakmé, 1883) and popularized by an award-winning British Airways commercial. A second Grammy-nominated album, In My Time, followed in 1993.

Yannis breakthrough concert, Yanni Live at the Acropolis, was filmed in September 1993 at the 2,000-year-old Herodes Atticus Theater at the Acropolis of Athens, an album and DVD being released in 1994. Acropolis was Yanni’s first live album, and used his core band with a full orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Iranian conductor Shahrdad Rohani.
Without financial backing, Yanni risked $2 million of his personal fortune in the Acropolis production in a strategy to boost his artistic profile and open new markets for his music. The resulting video was broadcast on PBS and became one of its most popular programs ever, seen in 65 countries by half a billion people. It became the second best-selling music video of all time (after Michael Jacksons Thriller), selling more than 7 million copies worldwide.
In March 1997, Yanni became one of the few Western artists permitted to perform and record at the Taj Mahal in India. Yanni followed in May 1997 with performances at the Forbidden City in Beijing, China, becoming the first Western artist in modern times permitted to perform at the historic site. These two events formed the live album and video, Tribute, released in November 1997.
Armen Anassian, violinist and conductor of Yannis orchestra for Tribute, conceded that he had some doubts about the artists plans to perform at Indias Taj Mahal and Chinas Forbidden City: "To be honest, a few years ago when he was talking about it, the idea was so amazing. I myself was very skeptical, understandably so. But the truth is, it happened. We did it." Anassian describes Yanni as "very optimistic" and has observed that "nothing really fazes him." That outlook carries over naturally to his music. "I dont think its a goal, per se. Hes very honest with his own feelings. His music really comes from the heart. He writes music with ease, the music comes out with relative ease. The feel-good portion of the music is a by-product. It coincides with what the people love to hear."
After negotiating the demands of gaining permission to perform at the Taj Mahal and Forbidden City in 1997, breaking up with Linda Evans in early 1998, and completing a long world tour later in 1998, Yanni halted his music career. Yanni later related that he had become depressed, and returned to Greece to live with his parents for three months before traveling the world. He didnt do an interview for two years, later explaining, "I traveled. I wanted to see other peoples ideas of life, get out of the American dream."
2000s
In 2000, after the two-year hiatus Yanni released If I Could Tell You, his first studio album in seven years. The album sold 55,000 copies in its first week, and landed at No. 20 on the Billboard charts, his highest debut to date.
The music in Yannis 2003 album Ethnicity represented many of the worlds cultures, Yanni saying it uses ethnicity to reflect the color and beauty of a multicultural society. The album was released near the publication date of Yannis autobiography, Yanni in Words. The ensuing Ethnicity tour would become the fourth largest concert tour of the year ranked by Billboard Magazine.needed On October 23, 2003, Yanni performed a keyboard instrumental version of the The Star-Spangled Banner before Game 5 of the 2003 World Series.
On May 6, 2004, the University of Minnesota conferred upon Yanni the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
The live album and video Yanni Live! The Concert Event (2006) became Billboards fourth best selling New Age album of both 2006 and 2007.
For the first time in his career, Yanni brought vocalists to the forefront in the Ric Wake collaboration Yanni Voices, the artists first studio album in six years. PBS broadcast video of a November 2008 Voices Acapulco concert weeks before the albums March 24, 2009 release by Walt Disney Records Disney Pearl imprint, the album release preceding a tour produced by Pearls Buena Vista Concerts division. The album went on to become Billboards second best selling New Age Album of 2009 and fifth best selling New Age album of 2010.
2010s
Yanni onstage with his orchestra and vocalists during the 2012 An Evening with Yanni tour. While performing, Yanni divides his time among two decks of electronic keyboards and an acoustic piano, and conducts his orchestra.
The Yanni Live in South America tour included September 2010 performances in Chile, Argentina, and Brazil, and a November 2010 performance in Puerto Rico.
The album Yanni Mexicanisimo, released in November of Mexicos bicentennial year 2010, was a tribute to that country through Yannis collaborative interpretation of its folk music. It involved collaboration with singer-songwriter Pepe Aguilar and singer-actress Lucero. It became the #7 selling New Age album of 2011.
The Truth of Touch album was released in February 2011, and went on to become the top-selling New Age album of 2011. Yannis first studio album of new material since Ethnicity eight years earlier, Truth of Touchs varied content reflected contemporary instrumental, electronic and cinematic influences, and crossed over into popular, new age and world music. Three of fifteen tracks on the predominantly instrumental album included vocals from respective Yanni Voices vocalists.
Tour performances in Mexico (January 2011) and Panama (February 2011) were followed by a 43-stop tour of Canada and the United States. In September-November 2011, Yanni toured fifteen stops in Eastern Europe and Asia, including performances in China, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Dubai, Oman and Russia. As with Yannis earlier concerts at the Acropolis, the Taj Mahal, and Royal Albert Hall, Yannis December 2011 concerts at El Morro castle in Puerto Rico were the subject of a PBS special, with corresponding CDs and DVDs being produced.
The five month long An Evening with Yanni tour began in March 2012, starting in Mexico (2 stops), and continuing to the United States (66 stops) and Canada (14 stops).
Yannis 2010-2012 tours included new vocalists, distinct from the 2008–2009 Yanni Voices vocalists.

From childhood, Yanni accepted a wide variety of musical styles, listening to radio stations from Northern Africa, Arab countries and Europe; he observed that "there were no rock stations or classical stations--each station would just play everything." Yannis music has been said to reflect his encounters with cultures around the world and embody his philosophy of “one world, one people.” In this vein, Booth Newspapers Jeffrey Kaczmarczyk perceived the eclectic inspirations of Yannis music to be an element of his success: Yannis "Middle Eastern and Oriental scales and mixed meters sound just exotic enough to entice his middle-of-the-road fans, but not so authentic as to mystify folks who grew up with a backbeat, so you can’t lose it," adding that certain songs "leave you with a sense that you’ve just heard a bit of a steel drum or a Greek bouzouki or a Japanese koto or possibly all three."
Liner notes from Yannis first album Optimystique (1984, 1989) say he recorded the album in 1980, when he would have been age 25.

Yannis musical influences include music from Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, as well as classical, rock and roll, and electronic music. Yanni explained that the 1970s, with its new technology and electronic instruments, were particularly influential at that stage in his career, and that even recently his Truth Of Touch album (2011) was started by experimenting with new sound designs. Having been exposed to classical music very early in life—listening to Bach at age 8—he counts several classical pianists and composers among his influences, citing Beethoven as a favorite and Chopin as "No. 2 favorite." Yanni mentioned being influenced not only by classical composers like Mozart and Bach, but also rock and roll bands such as Led Zeppelin, the People, and Black Sabbath.
Yanni explained that "the most influence I’ve ever had from music was doing (soundtracks for) movies, ... mostly instrumental music," mentioning his love for the work of Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams. The Augusta Chronicles Kelly Jasper noted that most of Yannis music is instrumental, indicating that Yanni surmised that the lack of lyrics is what allowed his music to become popular internationally. Yanni explained: "There are no lyrics in my music for the most part, so the whole message is transmitted through the rhythm, melody, and sounds, and I think that has to do with crossing all the borders and being able to go to different countries.” He has also said that "words operate in a different area of the brain," and "lyrics tend to put a song into a box."
However, Yanni performed with four vocalists in the forefront in Yanni Voices (2008-2009), and performed with two vocalists on tours (2010-2012) and in the Yanni Live at El Morro, Puerto Rico concerts (December 2011) and CD/DVD (2012). In late 2011 Yanni remarked that he tends to prefer instrumental music "because its more open, but the human voice too can be the most expressive instrument known to man. There is power to it." Referring to his creative experiences on the 2009 Voices project, Yanni explained that "while most of the music I write is instrumental, I love to use the human voice as another instrument."

Though "New Age" properly denotes a spiritual movement and not a genre of music, Yanni’s music has been said to be "adopted by" the New Age movement as it gained mainstream momentum. His music is also called contemporary instrumental and has been described as "an instrumental blend of fusion-jazz, world music, classical and soft rock." However, at least as early as 1988, Yanni was said to shun labels such as "Greek" and "New Age," emphasizing that "when someone says new age music, I think of something that you put on in the background while youre vacuuming the house. I dont want to relax the audience; I want to engage them in the music, get them interested." Distinguishing his work from what others have called ambient mood music, Yanni pointed out in 1994: "New Age implies a more subdued, more relaxed music than what I do. My music can be very rhythmic, very energetic, even very ethnic."
In 2012, Yanni remarked that he has never liked putting art into categories or assigning labels, adding that he always composed music "to honestly reflect the lessons learned and the experiences I have shared throughout my life." For example, Yannis university study of psychology influenced his music: “When I create music, it is a reflection of my soul, my experiences in life and my relationships with other people and cultures. Psychology, and understanding who we are as people in this world, is present in almost every creative thought I have."
Unconventional career track
The genre of Yannis music made it unsuitable for most commercial radio or for music television. In 2012 Yanni expressed the importance of PBS to his career, saying that the network "always allowed me to present my music without any censorship or influence, and encouraged me to be the artist that I am," and had been "a great part of my career for over 20 years."
Yanni took an unconventional path to recognition, for example, by risking his personal fortune to fund historic-monument events such as his 1993 Acropolis concerts, by producing specials on public television, by creating alone in his home-built studio, and by performing many of his own production duties—thus by-passing the conventional music industry. In 2000, The Los Angeles Times Don Heckman wrote that Yanni was "a living metaphor for Success on Your Own Terms, the dream of every American with an idea that is either ridiculed or ignored."

زندگی
یانی کریسومالیس در ۱۴ نوامبر ۱۹۵۴ در شهر کالاماتا یونان به دنیا آمد و دوران کودکی و نوجوانی اش را در شهر زیبا و کوهستانی کالاماتا گذراند. مادر و پدر یانی هر دو اهل یونان هستند. مادر وی فلیتسا (Felitsa) و پدرش سوتیری (Sotiri) نام دارد. یانی قطعه‌هایی را به نام مادرش ساخته‌است و علاقه خاصی به کشور خود و اماکن قدیمی دارد. در سن چهارده سالگی به رشته شنا علاقه مند شد و توانست در آن رکوردی ملّی برای کشورش، یونان، به جا گذارد و تلاش زیادی برای رسیدن به رقابت‌های المپیک نمود.
در سال ۱۹۷۲ میلادی به آمریکا برای تحصیل در رشته مورد علاقه اش، روان شناسی در مشهورترین دانشگاه روان شناسی دنیا یعنی مینسوتا رفت. پس از فارغ التحصیل شدن از دانشگاه در یک گروه محلی راک در مینسوتا بنام کاملئون (Chameleon) به عنوان نوازنده کیبورد آغاز به کار کرد. پس از آن کسی نمی‌داند چه اتـفاقی برای یانی افتاد اما او اکنون صاحب استودیوی شخصی است و بیش از 75 میلیون نسخه از آلبوم‌های وی در دنیا به فروش رفته‌است.
او به موسیقیدانی مستقل با عقاید و تفکری منحصر به فرد تبدیل شد و به شهرت و محبوبیتی جهانی دست یافت و این در حالی بود که یانی حتی قادر به خواندن و نوشتن ساده‌ترین نت‌های موسیقی نیز نبود. ولی با تبحری خاص ساخته‌های خود را با روش مخصوص خود و رسم الخط ابداعی خود می‌نگارد. یانی قطعاتی کامل و زیبا دارد که کاملا ساخته خود اوست و در سبکی انحصاری اجرا شده‌است. همچنین از او به عنوان یک افسانه زنده و بزرگترین موسیقیدان حال حاضر جهان نام برده می‌شود به طوری که نام او جزو ۱۰ موسیقیدان برتر تاریخ از دید انجمن موسیقی و هنر ثبت شده‌است.منبع
اکثر آلبوم‌های یانی توسط شرکتهای virgin records و یا EMI تولید، تهیه و توزیع می‌شوند. یانی موسیقی‌های زیادی برای برنامه‌های تلویزیونی و سینمایی ساخته و همچنین قطعات تبلیغاتی متعددی برای شرکتهای تجارتی و بازرگانی خلق نموده‌است.
او اوقاتش را بیشتر در لوس آنجلس و سیاتل آمریکا می‌گذراند و اکنون شهروند آمریکا به شمار می‌رود. او مدت‌ها با خانم هنرمندی بنام لیندا ایوانز همکاری صمیمی داشت و در اوایل سال ۱۹۹۸ این ارتباط را پایان یافته اعلام کرد.
یانی از اوایل سال ۱۹۹۸ تا ماه آوریل ۱۹۹۹ هیچ گونه فعالیت تولیدی کنسرت و توری را برگزار نکرد و به استراحت پرداخت. اما در سال ۲۰۰۰ یکی از بی نظیرترین آلبوم‌های خودش را ارائه داد. جالب این است که تمام تنظیمات و تبدیلات موسیقی این آلبوم شخصاً و فقط توسط خود یانی در استودیوی شخصی خودش انجام شد.ساخت این آلبوم بیانگر تغییرات در زندگی شخصی یانی بود.اثری متفاوت که تاثیر عمیق فرهنگ های مختلف جهان به خصوص شرق در یانی محسوس بود.
یانی تا به حال موسیقی به سبک مذهبی ارائه نکرده‌است چرا که همواره اعتقاد به خلق کارهایی جدید با تکیه به اندیشه‌های نو و جدید خود دارد. در قطعات Niki Nana و Aria موسیقی بر مبنای یک اپرای فرانسوی قدیمی متعلق به قرن نوزدهم میلادی بنام Lakme ساخته Leo Delibes می‌باشد و اشعاری که در این قطعات خوانده می‌شود اکثراً اصوات آهنگین بوده و فاقد معنای خاص می‌باشند و بر خلاف تصور، به زبان فرانسوی نمی‌باشند. به جز قسمت‌هایی محدود که به زبان انگلیسی هستند و در اشعار آلبوم ستایش ذکر شده‌اند.

یانی آهنگی تبلیغاتی را با همکاری مالکوم مکلارن ساخته‌است که سابقاً با گروه Pistols همکاری می‌کرده‌است. این آهنگ تغییر یافته یک اپرا است که با افزودن یک ترانه تکمیل شده‌است. این آهنگ که «جرات آرزو» یا Dare to Dream نام دارد برای شرکت هواپیمایی British Airways ساخته شده‌است.
خواننده مورد علاقه او پیتر گابریل است و اعتقاد دارد که در سال‌های اخیر به جز موسیقی محمد رسول‌الله، عیسی مسیح، دکتر ژیواگو، ایندرا گاندی و چند قطعه محدود دیگر، قطعه جالب توجهی نشنیده‌است.
سال‌ها پیش یانی با درامر خود چارلی آدامز Charlie Adams آشنا شد و اولین کار خود را بنام «بیرون از سکوت» یا Out Of Silence در سال ۱۹۸۷ (۱۳۶۶ شمسی) به بازار عرضه کرد.
یانی سال‌ها پیش با شهرداد روحانی نیز همکاری داشت و از تجربیات او استفاده فراوان برد و با همکاری و با استفاده از دانش و تجربه او، یکی از زیباترین کنسرت‌هایش را در شهر آکروپولیس یونان و با رهبری شهرداد روحانی اجرا نمود.
یانی در سال ۲۰۰۳ آلبومی متفاوت و پر تنوع به نام Ethnicity روانه بازار کرد و احاطه و قدرت خودش را در انواع مختلف موسیقی به دنیا ثابت کرد. این آلبوم یکی دیگر از خلاقیت های یانی را به نمایش گذاشت و ثابت کرد که یانی هنوز هم پیشرو در خلق آثار ماندگار و جدید است.یانی به یکباره نواهایی را کشف کرد که دارای ملودی های زیبا و هم آهنگ بود که در آثار جدیدش هم به چشم میخورد ولی اینبار یانی به اصل رسید او اینبار ملودی هایی را که دارای نظمی خاص بودند کنار هم چید تا دوباره اثری ماندگار خلق کند. در این آلبوم یانی با استفاده از خواننده‌های جدید و البته زیاد نسبت به کارهای قبلی اش نوعی تفاوت آشکار از لحاظ موسیقی با شعر در آهنگ‌هایش ایجاد کرده و به سبک جدید و منحصر به فرد Talk Show روی آورده‌است. به عقیده کارشناسان موسیقی و طرفداران موسیقی، یانی در سال‌های اخیر نسبت به دهه نود افت داشته هر چند این افت نامحسوس است ولی تاثیر زیادی بر روی یکه تازی یانی در عرصه موسیقی New Age داشته‌است.
البته خود یانی نام‌گذاری سبک عصر جدید (به انگلیسی: New Age) را بر روی آثار خود از بد شانسی‌اش می‌داند و خودش نام موسیقیٍ سازی معاصر (به انگلیسی: Contemporary Instrumental Music) را بیشتر می‌پسندد.
از جمله اجراهای وی می‌توان به کنسرت بزرگ آکروپولیس در ۱۹۹۴ چین و تاج محل در ۱۹۹۷ و لاس‌وگاس در ۲۰۰۶ اشاره کرد. آخرین اجرای یانی به سال ۲۰۰۸ در مکزیک بر می‌گردد، که در آن یانی همراه با چهار خوانندهٔ جوان برخی ار آثار مشهور و قدیمی‌اش از جمله در آیینه و ستایش را اجرا کرد. Nathan Pacheco، خواننده اپرا به ایتالیایی، Ender Thomas با ترانه‌هایی به زبان اسپانیایی و Chloe که در این اجرا به سه زبان انگلیسی و ایتالیایی و اسپانیایی یانی را همراهی کردند. در این برنامه خوانندهٔ دیگری با نام Leslie Mills هم حضور داشت.
آخرین آلبوم یانی Truth Of Touch نام دارد که در فوریه ۲۰۱۱ منتشر شد. طبق گفتهٔ یانی این نت‌های این آلبوم بیشتر الکترونیک است نه آکوستیک.
در آلبوم ۲۰۱۱ یانی از ۱۵ ترانه سه ترانه، آهنگ با خواننده و بقیهٔ آنها بی کلام است. خواننده‌های این آلبوم عبارت اند از لزلی میلز، نیتان پاشکو و کلوی لاوری که هرسه این افراد قبلا در آلبوم Voices هم با یانی همکاری داشته‌اند.

ولد یانی فی مدینة کالاماتا فی الیونان على سواحل البحر المتوسط بتاریخ 14 نوفمبر 1954 وهو الولد الأوسط لوالدیه.
بدأ بالعزف على آلة البیانو وهو فی الثامنة من العمر رافضا أخذ أی دروس فی العزف. لم تکن الموسیقى موهبته فقط، ففی عام 1969 وهو فی الرابعة عشر من العمر حطم یانی الرقم القیاسی الیونانی لسباق 50 متر فی السباحة الحرة للرجال.
فی العام 1972، وبتشجیع من والدیه ترک موطنه لیلتحق بجامعة مینوسوتا فی الولایات المتحدة الأمریکیة لیدرس علم النفس، وخلال فترة الدراسة قام بمشارکة فرقة روک بالعزف تدعى کامیلون وبدأ بتطویر أسلوبه الموسیقی الخاص مستخدما البیانو والأورغ لیبتکر أصوات جدیدة.
تخرج یانی من الجامعة عام 1979، وبعد التخرج قرر أن یمنح الموسیقى کل وقته وجهده لعام کامل. أراد أن یقصد الحیاة فی الموسیقى، وعلى الرغم من أنه لا یقرأ النوتة الموسیقیة فقد ألف أعمالا کاملة متحدیا التصنیف الموسیقی.
فی عام 1980 أصدر ألبومه المنفرد الأول بعنوان «متفائل» (Optimystique). ثم عمل یانی مع هولیوود وأنجز عدة أعمال موسیقیة لبعض الأفلام. وفی عام 1990 رافقت فرقة دالاس السیمفونیة یانی بحفلة موسیقیة أعطت بعدا آخر إلى أسلوبه الفرید وکانت مقدمة لأشیاء جدیدة. فی عام 1994 أحرز یانی انتصارا ذاتیا عندما عاد إلى موطنه الیونان وسجل عمل موسیقی فی مسرح هیرود أتیکوس فی أثینا الذی یعود إلى الألف الثانیة قبل المیلاد والنتیجة کانت ألبومه «فی الاکروبولیس» (at the Acropolis) لذی بیع منه أکثر من 7,000,000 نسخة حول العالم وحصد أکثر من 35 جائزة وارتفع لیصبح واحد من أکثر المبیعات للأعمال الموسیقیة المصورة.

فی عام 2000 أصدر یانی أول ألبوم له مسجل فی أستودیو بعد 7 سنوات وکان بعنوان «لو استطعت إخبارک» (If I Could Tell You)، بعد عامین من الانقطاع، یتکلم عن التغیرات فی حیاة ذلک الفنان، ومنها الانتقال إلى الساحل الشرقی لأمریکا وتغیرات أخرى رکزت على حیاته الشخصیة والمهنیة. وفی العام 2003 أصدر ألبومه «العرقیة» (Ethnicity) وهو الألبوم الثانی عشر له، وهو توسیع لمعنى «عالم واحد، شعب واحد» التی کانت دائما السمة الممیزة لمهنته. قدم فی هذا الألبوم مجموعة من المقطوعات الموسیقیة التی تنبض بالنغمات والأصوات لثقافات شعوب الأرض، مستخدما آلالات مختلفة على حد سواء کآلة الدیدجاریدو الأسترالیة وآلة دودوک الأرمینیة والکمان والطبل الهندی. ویقول یانی: «العدید من ثقافات شعوب العالم والأنماط الموسیقیة ممثلة فی هذا الألبوم. إن فیه الکثیر من اللون العرقی بمعنى آخر، أنه یمتلک العرقیة...حیث أن العرقیة یجب أن تعمل بالعرق والثقافة واللون وجمال المجتمع المتعدد الثقافات بالطریقة التی استخدمها لهذا الألبوم.»
إن واحدا من العناصر التی تمیز ألبوم "العرقیة" عن سابقیه هو الاستخدام الکبیر لصوت الإنسان، لیس فقط الأنغام المنفردة والتراتیل الجماعیة، بل بالکلمات أیضا، وهذا شیء نادر بالنسبة لهذا الفنان. فأغنیة «الوعد» (The Promise) على سبیل المثال، هی تعدیل لمقطوعة قدیمة تدعى «سیکرت فوس» رزت بکلمات کتبت من قبل صدیقة قدیمة له تدعى بامیلا مکنیل وأدیت بشکل عاطفی من قبل ألفریدا جیرالد التی رافقت رحلة یانی إجلال فی عام 1998. کما أن المقطوعة الأخیرة من الألبوم تعکس ثقافة هذا الفنان وتاریخه بأغنیة یونانیة شعبیة تدعى «جیفاری».

أصدر یانى آخر ألبوم له و هو یحمل اسم یانى میکسکانیام و هو یدمج بین الموسیقی الأمریکیة و المکسیکیة بعد ترقب طویل, وفی 24 مارس من عام 2009 قام یانی بإصدار ألبومین حملا اسمی Yanni Voices و Yanni Voces (أصوات یانی) وکان الألبوم الأخیر باللغة اللاتینیة بأکمله حیث قام یانی بالتعاون مع المنتج المعروف ریک ویک بصیاغة جدیدة لألحانه وتحویل بعض من مقطوعاته الشهیرة إلى أغان جدیدة یؤدیها أربعة من الشباب الموهوبین والمتمیزین هم نیثان باتشیکو ولیسلی مایلز وإندر توماس وکلوی، إضافة إلى مجموعة من الضیوف المکسیکیین والإسبان الذین شارکوا الغناء فی ألبوم YANNI VOCES منهم القدیر خوسیه خوسیه والنجمة أولغا تانون، وقد قام بجولة جدیدة فی المکسیک وأمیرکا خلال عامی 2008 و 2009 حملت اسم "Yanni Voices Live In Concert"، یذکر أن یانی قد صرح بأنه لن یتخلى عن موسیقا الانسترومینتال وسیستمر بتألیف هذا النوع من الموسیقى فی المستقبل.

Βιογραφία
Ο Yanni είναι συνθέτης και αυτοδίδακτος πιανίστας και γεννήθηκε στις 14 Νοεμβρίου 1954 στη Καλαμάτα. Ήταν μέλος της ελληνικής εθνικής ομάδας κολύμβησης εφήβων και σε ηλικία μόλις 14 ετών, κατέρριψε το πανελλήνιο ρεκόρ κολύμβησης, στα 50 μέτρα ελεύθερο. Όταν ενηλικιώθηκε (1972) πήγε στην Νέα Υόρκη για να φοιτήσει στο τμήμα Ψυχολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Μινεσότα ενώ παράλληλα έπαιζε πιάνο για τους Chameleon, γνωστή μπάντα Rock & Roll.
Το πρώτο του άλμπουμ έρχεται στα 1984 με τίτλο “Optimystique”, τα άλμπουμ "Dare To Dream" και το "My Time" προτάθηκαν για Bραβείο Grammy ενώ το άλπουμ Το "Reflections Of Passion" έγινε πολλές φορές πλατινένιος. Επίσης το 1989 η βρετανική αεροπορική εταιρεία British Airways χρησιμοποίησε την σύνθεση "Aria" του Yanni για τη διαφημιστική της καμπάνια.
Παρά το γεγονός ότι από τα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 80 πούλησε πάνω από 6 εκατομμύρια αντίτυπα, η καριέρα του εκτινάχθηκε ακόμα περισσότερο τον Μάρτιο του 1994 όταν και κυκλοφόρησε σε δίσκο αλλά και βίντεο η συναυλία - σταθμός που έδωσε για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα στο Ωδείο Ηρώδου του Αττικού στις 25 Σεπτεμβρίου του 1993 με τον τίτλο «Yanni in Concert: Live Acropolis» παρουσία 2.000 χιλιάδων θεατών.

Yanni ( /ˈjɑːni/ yah-nee) is a Greek self-taught pianist, keyboardist, and composer (born Yiannis Hryssomallis; Greek: Γιάννης Χρυσομάλλης, Giannis Chrysomallis; November 14, 1954) who has spent his adult life in the United States.
A self-taught musician who continues to use the musical shorthand that he developed as a child, Yanni has blended jazz, classical, soft rock, and world music to create predominantly instrumental works. As this genre of music was not well suited for commercial pop radio and music television, Yanni achieved international recognition by producing concerts at historic monuments and by producing videos that were broadcast on public television. His breakthrough concert, Yanni Live at the Acropolis, yielded the second best-selling music video of all time. Additional historic sites for Yannis concerts have included Indias Taj Mahal, Chinas Forbidden City, the United Arab Emirates Burj Khalifa, Russias Kremlin, and Puerto Ricos El Morro castle.
At least fourteen of Yannis albums have peaked at #1 in Billboards "Top New Age Album" category, and two albums (Dare to Dream and In My Time) received Grammy nominations. Through late 2011, Yanni had performed live in concert before more than two million people in more than 20 countries around the world, and has accumulated more than 35 platinum and gold albums globally, with sales totaling over 20 million copies. A longtime fundraiser for public television, Yannis compositions have been used on commercial television programs, especially for sporting events such as the Tour de France, World Figure Skating Championships, U. S. Open Tennis Championships and Olympic Games. He has written film scores and the music for an award-winning British Airways television commercial.
Yanni has employed musicians of various nationalities, and has incorporated a variety of instruments from around the world, to create music that has been called an eclectic fusion of ethnic sounds. Influenced by his encounters with cultures around the world, his music is said to reflect his “one world, one people” philosophy.

Early life
Yanni displayed musical talent at a young age, playing piano at the age of 6. His parents encouraged him to learn at his own pace and in his own way, without formal music training. The self-taught musician continues to use the "musical shorthand" that he developed as a child, rather than employing traditional musical notation.
Yanni set a Greek national record in the 50-meter freestyle swimming competition at age 14.
In 1972, Yanni moved from Greece to the United States to attend the University of Minnesota, receiving a B.A. degree in psychology in 1976. During his time as a student, Yanni played in a local rock band and continued to study piano and other keyboard instruments.
Music career
Yanni joined the Minneapolis-based rock group Chameleon, working with its founder, drummer Charlie Adams. After leaving the band, Yanni moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of movie soundtrack work.
1980s
The Herodes Atticus Theater at the Acropolis of Athens, site of Yannis September 1993 breakthrough concert Yanni Live at the Acropolis, performed in his native Greece.
In 1980 Yanni recorded his first album Optimystique, which Atlantic Records re-released in 1984 and Private Music re-released in 1989.
Yanni formed a band in 1987 and began to tour in 1988, when he went on the road with an ensemble including pianist/singer John Tesh and drummer Charlie Adams, touring to promote his early albums, Keys to Imagination, Out of Silence, and Chameleon Days. A highlight of the tour was a performance with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra that elicited a positive review, considered seminal to Yannis public recognition, from a Dallas Times Herald critic. Yannis emergence was said to be "timed perfectly" with the growing popularity of contemporary instrumental music.
1990s
Yanni gained visibility as the result of his November 1990 appearances in People and on The Oprah Winfrey Show with actress Linda Evans, with whom he had been in a relationship since 1989. However, high visibility appearances on public television, best-selling records and videos, and overflow concerts earned him recognition beyond his relationship with Evans.
Dare to Dream, released in 1992, was Yanni’s first Grammy-nominated album. It included "Aria," a song based on Léo Delibes The Flower Duet (Lakmé, 1883) and popularized by an award-winning British Airways commercial. A second Grammy-nominated album, In My Time, followed in 1993.

Yannis breakthrough concert, Yanni Live at the Acropolis, was filmed in September 1993 at the 2,000-year-old Herodes Atticus Theater at the Acropolis of Athens, an album and DVD being released in 1994. Acropolis was Yanni’s first live album, and used his core band with a full orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Iranian conductor Shahrdad Rohani.
Without financial backing, Yanni risked $2 million of his personal fortune in the Acropolis production in a strategy to boost his artistic profile and open new markets for his music. The resulting video was broadcast on PBS and became one of its most popular programs ever, seen in 65 countries by half a billion people. It became the second best-selling music video of all time (after Michael Jacksons Thriller), selling more than 7 million copies worldwide.
In March 1997, Yanni became one of the few Western artists permitted to perform and record at the Taj Mahal in India. Yanni followed in May 1997 with performances at the Forbidden City in Beijing, China, becoming the first Western artist in modern times permitted to perform at the historic site. These two events formed the live album and video, Tribute, released in November 1997.
Armen Anassian, violinist and conductor of Yannis orchestra for Tribute, conceded that he had some doubts about the artists plans to perform at Indias Taj Mahal and Chinas Forbidden City: "To be honest, a few years ago when he was talking about it, the idea was so amazing. I myself was very skeptical, understandably so. But the truth is, it happened. We did it." Anassian describes Yanni as "very optimistic" and has observed that "nothing really fazes him." That outlook carries over naturally to his music. "I dont think its a goal, per se. Hes very honest with his own feelings. His music really comes from the heart. He writes music with ease, the music comes out with relative ease. The feel-good portion of the music is a by-product. It coincides with what the people love to hear."
After negotiating the demands of gaining permission to perform at the Taj Mahal and Forbidden City in 1997, breaking up with Linda Evans in early 1998, and completing a long world tour later in 1998, Yanni halted his music career. Yanni later related that he had become depressed, and returned to Greece to live with his parents for three months before traveling the world. He didnt do an interview for two years, later explaining, "I traveled. I wanted to see other peoples ideas of life, get out of the American dream."
2000s
In 2000, after the two-year hiatus Yanni released If I Could Tell You, his first studio album in seven years. The album sold 55,000 copies in its first week, and landed at No. 20 on the Billboard charts, his highest debut to date.
The music in Yannis 2003 album Ethnicity represented many of the worlds cultures, Yanni saying it uses ethnicity to reflect the color and beauty of a multicultural society. The album was released near the publication date of Yannis autobiography, Yanni in Words. The ensuing Ethnicity tour would become the fourth largest concert tour of the year ranked by Billboard Magazine.needed On October 23, 2003, Yanni performed a keyboard instrumental version of the The Star-Spangled Banner before Game 5 of the 2003 World Series.
On May 6, 2004, the University of Minnesota conferred upon Yanni the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
The live album and video Yanni Live! The Concert Event (2006) became Billboards fourth best selling New Age album of both 2006 and 2007.
For the first time in his career, Yanni brought vocalists to the forefront in the Ric Wake collaboration Yanni Voices, the artists first studio album in six years. PBS broadcast video of a November 2008 Voices Acapulco concert weeks before the albums March 24, 2009 release by Walt Disney Records Disney Pearl imprint, the album release preceding a tour produced by Pearls Buena Vista Concerts division. The album went on to become Billboards second best selling New Age Album of 2009 and fifth best selling New Age album of 2010.
2010s

The Yanni Live in South America tour included September 2010 performances in Chile, Argentina, and Brazil, and a November 2010 performance in Puerto Rico.
The album Yanni Mexicanisimo, released in November of Mexicos bicentennial year 2010, was a tribute to that country through Yannis collaborative interpretation of its folk music. It involved collaboration with singer-songwriter Pepe Aguilar and singer-actress Lucero. It became the #7 selling New Age album of 2011.
The Truth of Touch album was released in February 2011, and went on to become the top-selling New Age album of 2011. Yannis first studio album of new material since Ethnicity eight years earlier, Truth of Touchs varied content reflected contemporary instrumental, electronic and cinematic influences, and crossed over into popular, new age and world music. Three of fifteen tracks on the predominantly instrumental album included vocals from respective Yanni Voices vocalists.
Tour performances in Mexico (January 2011) and Panama (February 2011) were followed by a 43-stop tour of Canada and the United States. In September-November 2011, Yanni toured fifteen stops in Eastern Europe and Asia, including performances in China, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Dubai, Oman and Russia. As with Yannis earlier concerts at the Acropolis, the Taj Mahal, and Royal Albert Hall, Yannis December 2011 concerts at El Morro castle in Puerto Rico were the subject of a PBS special, with corresponding CDs and DVDs being produced.
The five month long An Evening with Yanni tour began in March 2012, starting in Mexico (2 stops), and continuing to the United States (66 stops) and Canada (14 stops).
Yannis 2010-2012 tours included new vocalists, distinct from the 2008–2009 Yanni Voices vocalists.
Influences, music and concerts
Musical Influences
From childhood, Yanni accepted a wide variety of musical styles, listening to radio stations from Northern Africa, Arab countries and Europe; he observed that "there were no rock stations or classical stations--each station would just play everything." Yannis music has been said to reflect his encounters with cultures around the world and embody his philosophy of “one world, one people.” In this vein, Booth Newspapers Jeffrey Kaczmarczyk perceived the eclectic inspirations of Yannis music to be an element of his success: Yannis "Middle Eastern and Oriental scales and mixed meters sound just exotic enough to entice his middle-of-the-road fans, but not so authentic as to mystify folks who grew up with a backbeat, so you can’t lose it," adding that certain songs "leave you with a sense that you’ve just heard a bit of a steel drum or a Greek bouzouki or a Japanese koto or possibly all three."
Liner notes from Yannis first album Optimystique (1984, 1989) say he recorded the album in 1980, when he would have been age 25.

Yannis musical influences include music from Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, as well as classical, rock and roll, and electronic music. Yanni explained that the 1970s, with its new technology and electronic instruments, were particularly influential at that stage in his career, and that even recently his Truth Of Touch album (2011) was started by experimenting with new sound designs. Having been exposed to classical music very early in life—listening to Bach at age 8—he counts several classical pianists and composers among his influences, citing Beethoven as a favorite and Chopin as "No. 2 favorite." Yanni mentioned being influenced not only by classical composers like Mozart and Bach, but also rock and roll bands such as Led Zeppelin, the People, and Black Sabbath.
Yanni explained that "the most influence I’ve ever had from music was doing (soundtracks for) movies, ... mostly instrumental music," mentioning his love for the work of Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams. The Augusta Chronicles Kelly Jasper noted that most of Yannis music is instrumental, indicating that Yanni surmised that the lack of lyrics is what allowed his music to become popular internationally. Yanni explained: "There are no lyrics in my music for the most part, so the whole message is transmitted through the rhythm, melody, and sounds, and I think that has to do with crossing all the borders and being able to go to different countries.” He has also said that "words operate in a different area of the brain," and "lyrics tend to put a song into a box."
However, Yanni performed with four vocalists in the forefront in Yanni Voices (2008-2009), and performed with two vocalists on tours (2010-2012) and in the Yanni Live at El Morro, Puerto Rico concerts (December 2011) and CD/DVD (2012). In late 2011 Yanni remarked that he tends to prefer instrumental music "because its more open, but the human voice too can be the most expressive instrument known to man. There is power to it." Referring to his creative experiences on the 2009 Voices project, Yanni explained that "while most of the music I write is instrumental, I love to use the human voice as another instrument."

Though "New Age" properly denotes a spiritual movement and not a genre of music, Yanni’s music has been said to be "adopted by" the New Age movement as it gained mainstream momentum. His music is also called contemporary instrumental and has been described as "an instrumental blend of fusion-jazz, world music, classical and soft rock." However, at least as early as 1988, Yanni was said to shun labels such as "Greek" and "New Age," emphasizing that "when someone says new age music, I think of something that you put on in the background while youre vacuuming the house. I dont want to relax the audience; I want to engage them in the music, get them interested." Distinguishing his work from what others have called ambient mood music, Yanni pointed out in 1994: "New Age implies a more subdued, more relaxed music than what I do. My music can be very rhythmic, very energetic, even very ethnic."
In 2012, Yanni remarked that he has never liked putting art into categories or assigning labels, adding that he always composed music "to honestly reflect the lessons learned and the experiences I have shared throughout my life." For example, Yannis university study of psychology influenced his music: “When I create music, it is a reflection of my soul, my experiences in life and my relationships with other people and cultures. Psychology, and understanding who we are as people in this world, is present in almost every creative thought I have."
Unconventional career track
The genre of Yannis music made it unsuitable for most commercial radio or for music television. In 2012 Yanni expressed the importance of PBS to his career, saying that the network "always allowed me to present my music without any censorship or influence, and encouraged me to be the artist that I am," and had been "a great part of my career for over 20 years."
Yanni took an unconventional path to recognition, for example, by risking his personal fortune to fund historic-monument events such as his 1993 Acropolis concerts, by producing specials on public television, by creating alone in his home-built studio, and by performing many of his own production duties—thus by-passing the conventional music industry. In 2000, The Los Angeles Times Don Heckman wrote that Yanni was "a living metaphor for Success on Your Own Terms, the dream of every American with an idea that is either ridiculed or ignored."
