Iran is considered to be the richest country in culture in the world throughout history. Over the years, due to incompetence and lack of proper knowledge and management of the officials and those in power, a great deal of this culture has been lost. One of these losses in the culture and history of our country has been its festivals which have faded away both in number as well as quality.
One of these old festivals in Iran which has been held since ancient times is what is called Shab-e Yalda or Shab-e Chelleh.
It has been for thousands of years that this night, which coincides with December 20th, has been celebrated. It is the first night of the Winter season which is considered to be the longest night in the year. After this night and Winter stepping in, the days in the Northern hemisphere also get longer.
Yalda in meaning in Persian language means birth and birthday. It is celebrated all over Iran and people would get together spending the night next to their loved ones. There are special ceremonies held in different places and some rituals are followed which include reading poems of Hafez. This is the night when some delicious fruits such as watermelon and pomegranate are served along with pastries and nuts.
There is another popular festival in Iran called Nowruz. This is the ceremony held at the beginning of the new year. In other countries it is called Christmas. It is the first day of the lunar year in Iran which is celebrated by people with different customs in the entire country. This ceremony and the holidays continue for 13 days. This ceremony is also held in some other countries such as Azerbaijan, India, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkey.
There is another very popular festival in Iran which is called Chaharshanbe Suri. This ceremony occurs on the night of the last Wednesday of the year. It is still celebrated in different shapes by the Aryan descendants.
On this night, there is a fire made by people and they would dance around it singing songs and having fun. Fire is one of the elements that never gets dirty. It also represents light, cleanness, productivity, and well-being. Iranians would jump over the fire at this night and sing in wishes of the evil and disaster getting away from them and their hopes being fulfilled.
Unfortunately over the years the main purpose of and idea behind this ritual has changed and fireworks have substituted the happiness. This new and troublesome entertainment has claimed many lives and left even more injured.
